STORY DESCRIPTION An unsettling suicide on a country railway crossing, the sighting of a ghost in broad daylight, and the disappearance of a pair of valuable Labrador gun dogs, may have remained unconnected, if Molly Carter hadn't noticed the reports in the 'Carlisle Herald'.
Molly is a junior reporter for the local paper and has a column entitled, 'The Unexplained', so is constantly on the lookout for unusual local events in that part of Cumbria. Her column is very popular because she researches her stories with a passion that none of her fellow reporters can match.
When Molly links the three events to an area of forestry that encircles the Calverwood estate, she digs into the history of the Calverwood family. Molly discovers that the house, which stands in the middle of the estate, was the scene of the worst unsolved crime that Cumbria Police have left on their books.
Amelia and George Calverwood were murdered, and the house set ablaze, one Sunday morning in 1982. The deeper Molly delves, the more entangled the past and present become.
Molly is handicapped by a phobia of the night and dark spaces, so she has to plan her life meticulously to avoid falling apart. Her handicap though, turns out to have one benefit. Her condition gives her a way into the spirit world...
