First today we discuss in further detail the application
methods and techniques using the products and tools mentioned in issue one.
It's too easy to go to a department store and buy make-up and cosmetics, only
to take them home and abuse them.
Before using any foundation, wash the face
and apply a thin layer of moisturiser. This is prepping. Allow to absorb. It is
a good idea to do this when you first wake up so that you can get dressed or
brush your hair while waiting for it to absorb. Don't leave it too long,
though, because if the skin is too dry then the foundation won't stay as well.
Primer can be applied if desired, but it's not a necessary step and more of a
sales gimmick than anything else. It can help the foundation to stay on longer,
but many moisturisers are just as effective. Primer is also not good for dodgy
skin (eg. Acne-prone skin) because it just adds
another layer of gunk to block the pores with.
Liquid foundation should be applied with either the fingers, a sponge or a brush. Fingers are the
easiest option for applying foundation because they are the best for blending.
Using a sponge can be faster because you don't have to wash your hands
afterward, however it can waste a lot of product. If using a sponge, dip it
into the foundation but only load it up with a small amount and use these small
amounts one at a time. Start in the centre of the face and blend outwards. If
you require further coverage or the foundation isn't taking to the skin well,
wait a couple of minutes for the first layer to dry and then repeat. Whether
you have used your fingers or a sponge to apply the liquid foundation, always
follow with a large, round dry brush dipped in loose powder; either translucent
or the shade you want to finish with. The powder sets the foundation, making it
last longer and it also stops shine. If you have a liquid foundation that
doesn't quite match your skin tone, a loose foundation of a more suitable shade
is a good way to alter this. The application methods that apply to liquid
foundation also apply to mousse foundation. Clay-based foundation is best
applied with slightly moist fingertips, and stick foundation can be applied
directly to the face and then blended with fingertips or a sponge.
